After working as a magician and journalist, Albert Sidney Fleischman began writing successful adult novels and screenplays before trying children's and young adult fiction. His best known character is probably the Iowa farmer, McBroom, but Fleischman received the 1987 Newbery for "The Whipping Boy," a tale of mistaken identity, adventure and friendship among boys.
